Folder sync

Compare two folders. Sync them on purpose.

DriveManager compares two folders with all their subfolders — on your Mac, a cloud drive or a server — shows what differs row by row, and copies only what you approve.

The Sync window lists every difference before anything is copied. (Screenshot: an invoices folder and its backup.)

Step by step

From two panels to a finished sync

The two folders can be on any sources: a local folder and its Google Drive copy, a Dropbox folder and an SFTP server, two disks.

  1. Open the two folders

Show one folder in the left panel and the other in the right one, then choose Commands → Synchronize Folders… (⇧⌘Y). The window compares them at once.

  2. Choose the direction

Left to Right or Right to Left for a backup or a mirror, Both Ways to keep two copies in step. The options decide whether new items are copied, changed ones updated and orphans deleted.

  3. Review what will happen

Every row shows its action — copy, replace, delete, conflict or skip — and why. Filter by group, search by name, and change any row’s action by hand.

  4. Sync

Sync Now (⌘↩) first shows a summary of what will be created, replaced or moved to the Trash. The copies run as ordinary jobs in the Activity Log, and the window compares again when they are done.

The whole Sync window, with the folder cards, the direction and the plan.

Every row tells you why

The list shows the two folder trees side by side, with size and date on each side, the action and the reason.

  • Only on the left or only on the right: copied to the other side, or deleted if you mirror
  • Left is newer or right is newer: the newer file replaces the older one
  • Different or equal: same date but different content is left alone unless you say otherwise
  • Conflicts in a two-way sync are never decided for you: until you choose, they are skipped

Options for real backups

A changed option dims the list until you compare again, so a sync never runs a plan you can’t see.

Compare by content

Files of the same size are checked by content. Against Google Drive or Dropbox, DriveManager uses the checksum the service keeps, without downloading the files.

Exclude patterns

One pattern per line, as in a .gitignore file: *.tmp, build/, /Docs/old. Excluded items are never copied or deleted.

Two-way history

In a two-way sync DriveManager remembers the last state, so it can tell a deleted file from a new one and spot files changed on both sides.

Profiles

Save the two folders, the direction and the options under a name, and repeat a backup from the Profiles menu with one click.

Questions about folder sync

Does DriveManager keep folders in sync automatically?

No. Folder sync is a comparison you run, review and start yourself. Profiles make repeating it a one-click job, but nothing syncs in the background.

Can I sync a local folder with a cloud drive or a server?

Yes. Each side can be any source DriveManager opens: local and network folders, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, SFTP, FTP, WebDAV or S3-compatible storage. Between different services the files pass through your Mac.

What happens to a file changed on both sides?

In a two-way sync it becomes a conflict. The details show both versions with their dates and sizes; you keep the left, keep the right, or skip it. DriveManager never picks one for you.

Is there an undo for a sync?

No — undo exists only for Multi-Rename. That is why every sync starts with a review of what will be replaced or deleted, and why deletes go to the Trash by default. More about Multi-Rename
