Folder access
DriveManager runs in the macOS sandbox, like Mac App Store apps. It opens the folders and disks you allow in an Open window; allowing your home folder once covers almost everything.
Coming from Total Commander
There is no Total Commander for macOS. DriveManager is a Mac file manager in the same two-panel tradition: F5 copies to the other panel, Space marks, Tab switches. Here is what maps across, what is Mac-specific, and what isn’t there.
Key mapping
DriveManager’s default keys for the commands you use most in Total Commander. Where they differ, the Total Commander preset adds the familiar key beside the Mac one.
| Task | Total Commander | DriveManager |
|---|---|---|
| View a file | F3 | F3 (or ⌘3) View File, in a read-only viewer window |
| Edit a file | F4 | F4 (or ⌘4) Edit File, in your external editor |
| Copy to the other panel | F5 | F5 (or ⌘5) Copy; F2 in the dialog puts the job in the queue |
| Move to the other panel | F6 | F6 (or ⌘6) Move |
| Rename in place | Shift+F6 | ⇧F6 Rename… |
| New folder | F7 | F7 (or ⌘7) New Folder; “a/b/c” creates every level |
| Delete | F8 | F8 (or ⌘8) Move to Trash; ⇧F8 Delete Permanently |
| Mark an item | Space, Insert | Space, Insert; on a folder, Space also calculates its size |
| Select group, unselect group, invert | Num +, Num −, Num * | Num +, Num −, Num *, or ⌘=, ⌘−, ⌥⌘A without a keypad |
| Switch panels | Tab | Tab |
| Change drive or source | Alt+F1, Alt+F2 | ⌥F1, ⌥F2: local folders, disks, cloud accounts and servers |
| Swap panels | Ctrl+U | ⌘U; ⌃U with the Total Commander preset |
| New tab | Ctrl+T | ⌘T; ⌃T with the Total Commander preset |
| Back and forward | Alt+←, Alt+→ | ⌘[, ⌘]; ⌥←, ⌥→ with the Total Commander preset |
| Properties | Alt+Enter | ⌘I Get Info; ⌥↩ with the Total Commander preset |
| Directory hotlist | Ctrl+D | ⌃D Favorites… |
| Quick view | Ctrl+Q | ⌃Q Quick View, in the other panel |
| Find files | Alt+F7 | ⌥F7 Find Files… |
| Compare directories | Shift+F2 | ⇧F2 Compare Folders |
| Multi-rename | Ctrl+M | ⌃M Multi-Rename… |
Also familiar: ⌥F5 packs into a ZIP archive, ⌥F9 extracts to the other panel, ⌘R refreshes (⌃R with the preset). Every DriveManager key can be changed in Settings ▸ Keyboard.
Settings ▸ Keyboard ▸ Presets ▸ Total Commander adds Total Commander’s keys that work on a Mac beside DriveManager’s own, and keeps the F-key layout. The import sheet lists every change before you click Apply.
Can’t find a command? ⇧⌘P opens Quick Open: type a few letters, and every command row shows its key.
Multi-Rename (⌃M) works like Total Commander’s Multi-Rename Tool: a mask with placeholders such as [N], [E] and the counter [C], plus Find & Replace, Change Case and more as a list of rules, with a preview of every name, presets, Undo Rename and Save Log…. How Multi-Rename works
Tools are your own scripts — shell, Python or AppleScript — like Total Commander’s user commands. Run them with F2 (Tools Menu), their own key or the palette. Arguments use placeholders: %P the active folder, %T the other panel’s folder, %N the cursor item’s name, %F its path, %S the marked items, %L a list file.
macOS runs the scripts for DriveManager, outside its sandbox: only scripts you put in the scripts folder run, and only after you enable each one in Settings ▸ Tools.
A few things work the macOS way, not the Windows way.
DriveManager runs in the macOS sandbox, like Mac App Store apps. It opens the folders and disks you allow in an Open window; allowing your home folder once covers almost everything.
Server passwords, private keys and cloud sign-ins are kept in the macOS Keychain, never in a plain file.
iCloud Drive and the folders of cloud storage apps show each file’s sync status. Download Now keeps a local copy, Remove Download frees the space.
⌘Y opens the macOS Quick Look window, ⌃1–⌃7 set Finder tags, and F8 moves items to the Trash.
DriveManager is its own Mac app in the same tradition, not a port or a copy of Total Commander. Some things don’t carry over:
Total Commander, by Christian Ghisler, runs on Windows; there is no macOS version. DriveManager is a separate Mac app in the same two-panel tradition, with no connection to Total Commander or its author.
No. DriveManager can’t load Total Commander plugins of any kind. It has its own extension points: tools (your scripts) and script viewers for file types it doesn’t know.
No. The Total Commander key preset gives you the familiar keys, and your DriveManager key map can be exported as a .dmkeys file and imported on another Mac.
⇧F8 deletes permanently, after a red alert. To make F8 itself delete permanently, change the F8 key setting in Settings ▸ General; ⇧F8 then moves to the Trash.
Yes. In the Copy or Move dialog, F2 or ⇧Return queues the job, so big transfers run one after another. The jobs list can reorder, start, pause and resume them. The dual-pane workflow in detail
